In The Elder Scrolls Online, there are six crafting skills, which can be divided into crafting skills for gear and consumables.
The three skill lines for crafting armor and weapons are:
Blacksmithing |
Heavy armor and melee weapons |
Clothing |
Light and medium armor |
Woodworking |
Magical staves, bows and shields |
The kinds of gear crafting skills you want to pick up mainly depends on what your character uses. Mages for example might want to level up clothing and woodworking to craft their own gear, whereas knights in heavy armor mainly focus on blacksmithing.
The three skill lines for crafting consumables are:
Alchemy |
Potions and poisons |
Enchanting |
Glyphs for gear enchantments |
Provisioning |
Beneficial buff food |
Consumables are often underrated, but they do have a significant impact on your efficiency. Investing in those skills is definitely worth it. Food and beverages buff your attributes or the attribute regeneration respectively, which makes attribute management in fights way easier.
Why should I spend time and skill points in non-combat skills?
Easy. It saves a lot of money and you do not depend on other people to craft your gear. You want new gear, but your trusted crafter friend isn't online? Too bad. So pick up a hammer and level those skills to be your own trusted crafter!
Of course, combat skills are important. But if you aim to level up crafting skills, you surely can spend a skill point in a crafting skill line every now and then. Generally, levelling up crafting skills doesn't take too long if you do it in passing. So you don't have to spend a dozen skill points right away.
How do I level up my crafting skills then?
You level up a crafting skill by crafting the respective items. Weaving a robe levels up your clothing skill, forging a sword levels up blacksmithing, brewing a potion levels up alchemy... you get the gist. But that's not all. Deconstruction is an integral part of blacksmithing, clothing, woodworking and enchanting. It means taking apart gear (or glyphs when enchanting is concerned). Note, that you can of course deconstruct gear that you crafted yourself, but you gain a whole lot more inspiration (= experience in those skill lines) by deconstructing looted armor, weapons or glyphs.
Pro-Tips:
- Start deconstructing looted gear for the skill lines you want to level up early on - saves a lot of time later
- Keep gear with traits for research (see Traits)
- Spend some skill points in the extraction passives to maximize the output of deconstruction (see Harvesting Materials)
