What is metagaming?
This term is used for roleplaying on information that have been gained by other means than direct interaction.
What do you use it for?
- Spy networks - of course we spy on each other. Since this is difficult to play, it happens off-screen and the players will share the information that can be sniffed out on request
- Characters/settings who are present / part of your character's background, but aren't actually existing in-game (family at home, tavern nights out..)
- Research and study, your character does whatever it is they do 24/7.
Why isn't it godmoding/powerplay?
The Great House Telvanni believes firmly in the distinction between a player and their character. Your character does not possess all the facts and knowledge that you as their player has access to. It's your responsibility to make sure that you don't spoil other players' stories by using information that your character does not have access to and that they have not agreed on you to use.
If in doubt, ask!
What about spoilers?
We are generally rather open about things. Every player can ask about plots and be spoilered. We do this because we believe that we can have more fun if we can tell a story together instead of playing tug-of-war with a plot until it tears. If you don't want to be spoilered (or don't trust your metagaming skills), feel free to say so, and it will be considered.
But this takes away the surprise!
Most of our players hate surprises. That's why we usually spoiler everyone who asks for it. It's in the players' responsibility to make sure that the characters still are appropriately taken aback.
If you are in this for the surprise, please make sure your character behaves in a way that does not provoke a sudden and unpleasant end. :)
