genius loci

Back

I sense... something in the vault. What is it?

Spoiler Level: Obvious

You don’t feel as if you are alone in here. You feel as if someone is… with you, somehow.

If you are benevolent, or a member of the Telvanni bloodline: Something here gives you the feeling that it’s okay, that everything will be fine. This is such a good place to sit down with one of those tomes you’ve always been meaning to read. Maybe read all of them.

(Obviously that feeling is stronger if you have been in Heimlyn Keep for a while.)

If you are malevolent towards either one or all members of the Telvanni bloodline or residents oft he Keep, or have ill intentions towards either the spirits of Heimlyn Keep or the reliquary itself:
Something wants you gone. Something is lurking in the shadows, and the spirits are aggressive towards you – will even attack you! Coming here was not a good idea in the first place.

If you are magickally perceptive: This place is a powerhouse – it’s not as potent as a Tower would be, not even on the second or third glance, but the longer you look the more clear it becomes  that there is so much more to this place than meets the eye, and the first impression is already rather... amazing.

This information is obtained by entering the vault at least once.

Spoiler Level: A bit of investigation

The vault contains something that is called a „Genius Loci“, which translates to „Spirit of the place“ in magobabble. Somehow, there seems to be something incredibly powerful beneath the vault, or maybe the vault _is_ something incredibly powerful. Also, it’s somewhat conscient – „semi-conscient“ was what it was called. This place seems to have an… awareness?

If you are magickally perceptive: Watching the conscience is like watching a sleeping Siltstrider. It’ll probably still crush anyone who pokes it, but as long as you tread lightly, you’ll be fine.

This information is obtained by investigating a bit closer and talking to the wizards.

Spoiler Level: I want to know!

I’ll ask the wizards, or spy the vehk out of everyone!

The place used to be a research facility of little remark, until shortly after the incident a few Telvanni wizards discovered the place, first among them Vivicah. They got involved with the spirit underneath the reliquary far more than the Keepers ever dared – and those have been here for generations. Yet Vivicah was the first to mantle the ancient consciousness of the Genius Loci. Maybe nobody else was ever powerful enough – or maybe the Keepers always knew better?

Mantling – Vivicah describes it „I walked like it until it walked like me“. The Archmagister is difficult to distinguish from the place, magickally speaking, she could as well be a tree with a significantly higher Meridia concentration with a convergence of magickal power, it’s hard to tell where Heimlyn Keep ends and the mer begins.

The Genius Loci seems to be generally benevolent, as far as the inhabitants of Heimlyn Keep and/or the descendants of the Telvanni Bloodline are concerned. Vivicah explains it as follows:

„Do you know these nightmares where you are in a library, and all around you are high piles made out of ancient and irreplacable books? And then, for some reason, you bump against one of the piles, and all the towering heaps of books come tumbling down on you, and you know that you must catch every single one of them? And then you wake up, screaming?

Well, thing is this. We are the books. And the Genius Loci can not wake up.“

To get the full story, one has to rely upon information given by either Vivicah, Valorin or Rahaen'fviel, either directly or by hearsay, as the others who'd know most likely won't tell.

Spoiler Level: Give me everything! Even OOC!

No.

But you can have a few facts.

Beyond Heimlyn Keep is something that is so powerful that even Creation itself does not dare look upon it - some sort of uber-powerful Doomsday device. For that reason, the Bones of the Earth shaped themselves into a protector – a being that has just a single purpose – keeping everyone and everything safe (The word to google would be "Mythopoeia"). It does not know (or care) from what, and ist definition of „safe“ might be a bit erratic at times, but this is the reason why everyone here gets along so nicely: Everyone who doesn’t actively ward themselves is influenced by incredibly subtle illusion-magick like waves washing against a rock, dulling the Telvanni eagerness for competition and actually making the cooperative research in the Central Morrowind Branch possible.

You have no way of knowing this in character without talking to Vivicah.
