re: Thervam Releth

0

Summary

Name:

Thervam Releth

Age:

700, give or take - he was born in the First Era but in the last few centuries didn't bother remembering the exact year. Still, he recalls being born in Sun's Dusk, around the summoning day of Boethiah.

Birthsign:

The Atronach

Appearance:

Thervam is old. His frame is lean and thin, his face shows some wrinkles due to his old age. His hair and goatee might have been black some time in the past, but not anymore. He never dabbled in Restoration magic, deeming it unworthy of study, preferring instead to make deals with the denizens of Oblivion to extend his lifespan well beyond Dunmeri standards. While this spared him the need to study another school of magic and allowed him to focus on Conjuration and Destruction magic, it also deprived him of the luxury of maintaining a younger appearance. Not that he cares.

He doesn't often dress in Dunmeri fashion, preferring instead to pay homage to his lifelong obsessions, the Dwemer and the realms of Oblivion, by donning either dwarven or daedric clothes.

Personality:

Haughty and aloof, Thervam is a scholar and devotes every waking hour to his ruminations on the Dwemer and the Daedra. That means every hour of every day, since he cannot recall the last time he didn't resort to magical means in order to avoid the need for sleep. He doesn't usually bother with small talk - even when he does, part of his thoughts are probably preoccupied with other more significant matters.

He respects knowledge and knowledgeable individuals, believing himself to be nothing but a dabbler when compared to the likes of Sotha Sil or Divayth Fyr. On the other hand he deeply despises those who blatantly show off their knowledge and act like they have already achieved a perfect understanding of the subject they claim to be experts of. This tendency has often ended up putting him at odds with other members of House Telvanni.

As much as he despises arrogance, he also has little patience for humility: a mer's goal should be to strive to know himself, and claiming to be lesser than one really is is as bad as claiming to be more. Still, he shows a certain amount of respect towards those sincerely willing to learn and experience, and at times might even bring himself to loosen up and share his knowledge around this particular kind of people.

Religious beliefs:

Thervam politely envies the Tribunal's understanding of Mundus and beyond, particularly Sotha Sil's. He respects them for this, but doesn't worship them in the same way a devout Temple initiate would.

In his dealings with the Daedric Princes, he's come to share Divayth Fyr's opinion about them: most of them are best avoided. Azura's insights, on the other hand, while often puzzling and obscure are undeniably useful, while Mehrunes Dagon can be threatening but lacks the subtleness of Boethiah or the malevolent nature of Molag Bal, and is therefore easier to deal with. He rarely strikes deals with any prince other than the aforementioned.

Childhood:

Thervam was born in Sadrith Mora, the son of a Mouth of House Telvanni. It was therefore to be expected for him to show a talent for magic since a young age. Since his father's chores often kept him away from his family, the young mer self-taught himself taking advantage of the vast paternal library. House Telvanni was no Mages Guild, after all, and he never actually expected anyone to teach him anything.

He never showed any interest in the house's politics, being content with remaining a Spellwright and peacefully pursuing his interests. This abruptly changed when his father was murdered by a rival housemer, together with the Master he served. Thervam had to make his way to Tel Branora in order to avoid the threat on his life, while at the same time estabilishing contacts amoung the housemer of his age in Mistress Therana's tower to try and deal with his father's rival. All that careful planning proved useless when the murderer, now a Mouth himself, was incinerated on his visit to Tel Branora by a marginally annoyed Therana. He was wearing a robe the same shade of green as the Mistress'.

Relieved, Thervam spent the next decades in Tel Branora, carefully avoiding Therana and spending most of his time exploring the Dwemer ruins that dotted Azura's coast and the Ascadian Isles. He never moved back to Sadrith Mora, sickened by the useless house politics that plagued it.

Recent history:

After visiting most of the Dwemer ruins in southern Vvardenfell, Thervam came to the decision of leaving for the mainland: after the Soulburst Vvardenfell was growing increasingly dangerous, despite Vivec's presence, and the remaining ruins had become too dangerous to explore. This finally occurred to him when he found out a whole clan of vampires was settling in the ruins of Galom Daeus, which he had been planning to explore for weeks.

Hoping to find better opportunities outside Vvardenfell, Thervam gathered his research on the mainland's known ruins, and left for Skyrim.

Notable relationships:

Thervam's dealings with his peers have always been cold at best. When leaving for Skyrim he brought with him those few creatures that he used to associate with: Tsajadhi, a senche Khajiit that he purchased in Tel Aruhn when she was still a cub. Thervam has always made a point of treating her well enough for her to actually become loyal: you cannot travel on a resentful ride, after all.

Next comes Finder. Once a summoned scamp he employed as a handyman and lab assistant, Thervam eventually grew tired of the constant mumbling, drooling, jumping and the general poor hygiene the little daedra demonstrated. Upon finding a deactivated spider automaton in moderately good repair, he trapped the scamp's soul and used it to restore the animunculus' power. Finder might not enjoy his new condition, but he serves him loyally and has no way to express his dissatisfaction. He's also much more interesting to look at now.

Finally, Thervam has agreed with Azura to make it so that a specific Winged Twilight will always answer his summons: called Leraje, the daedra has been a faithful companion of the old mer for the last few centuries. Thervam appears to be more than fond of her, and often converses with her just for the pleasure he derives from her company.

Unusual talents/Oddities:

What can be suitably described as "unusual", when one is talking about a centuries-old mer capable of summoning creatures from Oblivion to do his bidding, or lightning from the sky to smite his foes? Apart from the obvious, Thervam will admit to have an unusually vast knowledge on the subject of Dwemers and Dwemer ruins. He has a soft spot for the topic, and might trust too quickly or too eagerly those who seem to share his passion.

The old mer is also an adept enchanter, and enjoys improving even the most mundane items with small splashes of magicka. His cold-enchanted sujamma decanter and life-detecting ash goggles are prime examples of his attitude towards enchanting as part of his everyday habits.

Motivation:

As a member of House Telvanni in Vvardenfell, Thervam expects to be expected in the mainland's Telvanni settlements once rumors of his presence in Morrowind start spreading. He plans to visit Heimlyn Keep in Stonefalls as soon as he can - Skyrim's cold weather annoyed him faster than even he expected, after all.
