Contrary to some misconceptions, the three common Dunmeri terms of address are not gendered, but instead assigned according to the level of respect for the addressee.
Sera is the most recognisable vocal tic of any individual raised in Morrowind. As a contraction of “muthsera”, it is considered polite but informal and does not imply any specific respect, allowing it to be used in general conversation. Thanks to its omnipresence in most Dunmeri speech, it features heavily in stereotypes, mockery and jokes about the race.
Muthsera is predominantly reserved for either an acquaintance or somebody with a reputation (or somebody who has something the speaker wants). It isn’t considered incredibly formal, although typically only upper-class Dunmer will address strangers as “muthsera”, but it does work well as a compliment.
Serjo shows the highest respect for a person. In addition to close friends, it is also employed when addressing high-ranking House members and well known political or cultural figures (for example, Serjo Indoril Nerevar Mora). Its use implies great respect and is not to be taken lightly.
One theory as to where the confusion over gender arose is that House membership is usually matrilineal [X]. A male Dunmer with House ambitions seeking to flatter a female Dunmer will refer to her as “muthsera”, whereas she remains likely to address him as “sera”. On the whole, however, gender identity in Dunmer society is considered far too complicated - or, depending on who you ask, too simple - an area to base these conventions on.
