re: Ralyn Telvanni

0

Name:

Ralyn Telvanni

Age:

224

Birthsign:

Born on the 21st of Sun's Dusk under the Atronach.

Appearance:

Ralyn has ashen hair, worn in dunmeri fashion. While he values his appearance, he sees no use in wearing jewelry or body modifications of any kind. He prefers to wear dark colored or black robes, which goes well with the type of magic he likes to meddle with.

In combat, he uses his staff to attack enemies from afar. He prefers to use ice magic, even outside of battle. He's a master of conjuration, alteration and illusion, most of which he learned during his studies of Oblivion. Even spells that might be considered as controversial are part of his repertoire.

Personality:

Like most Telvanni, Ralyn values nothing more than his studies and therefore cannot stand distractions such as pesky adventurers. However, he knows his place within the Great House and proves to be a reliable and ambitious member which whould never disappoint their superiors.

One might not perceive Ralyn as a very sociable person. Not that he is shy; he just needs his own space until he gets comfortable with someone. This also involves a lot of mutual trust, as Ralyn is justifiably paranoid. He can't stand people watching him from a distance. If it is an assassin watching him, he might as well come near and kill him from close up. Well, try to kill him.

Religious Beliefs:

He is faithful in the Tribunal, as long as it does not interfere with his studies.

Childhood:

Being a talented upstart in his youth, Ralyn drew a lot of envy from his peers. Early in his childhood, he showed advanced knowledge about magical laws and was able to cast adept spells before he reached adolescence. But even though he had a promising attitude towards magic and mysticism, Ralyn had to suffer a lot of pressure from his parents, Theryn and Liliah, both being high ranking magisters of House Telvanni.

During his later childhood, his mother devised some… challenges for Ralyn to further his alchemical knowledge. She occasionally poisoned his food, expecting him to identify the ingested poison according to the effect it had on him. He then was instructed to brew an antidote before the poisoning was too advanced to cure. Ironically, his mother did not notice the poison in her drink that killed her. Her assassin was brought to justice right away, but the mystery of who sent him is still unsolved.

As a young adult, he decided to study under a master other than his father, which eventually caused tensions within the family. He was designated to follow in his father’s footsteps, just like the four siblings (Felisa, Shalil, Rinori and Velyna) before him. But alchemy and restoration never seemed promising for Ralyn. Instead, he wanted to excel in other magical arts, such as the manipulation of animate and inanimate entities through means of illusion, conjuration and alteration.

He’s still a long way from mastering these arts but he made considerable progress in Vvardenfell. Also, having grown up with it, Ralyn knows this and that about alchemy (like the identification of ingested poison for example) and enchanting.

(For more info, have a look at his personal history.)

Recent History:

Ralyn came to Heimlyn Keep, as it is the Telvanni stronghold closest to the province of Cyrodiil and several dolmen in Stonefalls. As of recently, he is the Mouth of Telvanni Cernon, therefore spending some time in his tower, Tel Shogah.

Notable Relationships:

He is the Mouth of Councellor Cernon.

Ralyn is in a romantic relationship with the Archmagister's advisor Nirait Ashalkimallit.

He hired two mercenaries - Alskander and Stays-Silent - to do some dirty work for him.

Unusual talents/Oddities:

Unlike most Telvanni, he trusts no one with the preparation of his meals and beverages. Not even his servants. That’s why Ralyn learned to cook. The meals may not be as tasty as if they were prepared by a skilled chef, but at least he does not run the risk of getting poisoned. He carries a large stache of antidotes with him at any time, should he get poisoned nonetheless.

He also has this habit of chewing herbs from time to time, more so when he drinks alcoholic beverages. The herbs come from a plant, which was created by his older sister Rinori Telvanni. Chewing its leaves is part of a long-term treatment that successfully detoxifyes the body, rendering the most common ingested poisons ineffective within seconds. Speaking of alcoholic beverages: When he's offered a drink, he insists on opening it himself and carefully checks the bottle's seal before doing it. After pouring a cup of it, he freezes the bottle's opening shut instead of using the cork and unfreezes it when necessary.

Ralyn has a fondness for crystals and crystal magic of sorts. He often uses them to store magical patterns which can then be imprinted or triggered under certain circumstances. During one of his experiments, in which he tried to cultivate those crystals, a pattern was triggered on accident, causing rapid growth. The aftermath of this specific experiment can be seen in the huge crystal cluster permeating the walls of his sadrith (as seen below). While the crystals have lost all their magical abilities, they remain as some fancy wall decoration and even double as interior lighting.

Being a Telvanni mage, Ralyn has the innate talent to perceive magicka. He sees magicka in the form of smoke, vapor, steam or dust clouds. While conjuration magicka appears as blue swirling smoke similar to that of incense sticks, alteration is edgy and chaotic. Illusion is black smoke and restoration magicka appears as bright cloudlets.

Ralyn maintains a strong connection to Apocrypha and by extension, Hermaeus Mora.

Motivation:

In contrast to the majority of Nirn’s inhabitants, Ralyn sees the Plane Meld as an exciting event which could further his studies in planar and dimensional manipulation, as well as interdimensional transportation. Sure, teleportation is very common practice these days, in fact it is so common that even an infant could manage a simple teleportation spell… but Ralyn aims for more. He wants to explore ways of magic to transport relatively massive objects such as whole buildings. While he does not conform with Molag Bal’s interests, Ralyn admires the Daedric Prince’s collection of Tamrielic places in Coldharbor.

While researching an anchor in Stonefalls, Ralyn happend to bind a scamp and accidentally managed to sever its connection to Oblivion. The associated consequences sparked a new line of research about Daedra, which he only conducts in secrecy in his tower Tel Arkhes near Sadrith Mora.

(Side note to Tel Arkes: Ralyn is a pragmatist. That's why his tower is relatively small, compared to those of other Telvanni. He prefers to have his working equipment close at hand instead of waltzing through an unnecessarily spacious mushroom castle.)
